Creating Immersive Therapeutic Experiences

Multi-sensory Environments use the senses of touch, sight, hearing, and feeling as well as memory cues to improve the mental and emotional functioning of our clients.

The Origins

Multi-sensory environments were developed to address the need for those with cognitive challenges to relate more closely to the world around them in an appropriately challenging and safe environment.

In the 1970s, two Dutch therapists created the first multi-sensory room for those with intellectual disabilities to utilize their senses to absorb and react to their surroundings. The practice then spread to the United Kingdom and United States for use by those with a spectrum of cognitive and emotional challenges including autism, dementia, brain injuries, Alzheimer's, developmental delays, PTSD, and those in need of palliative care.

What They Include

Our environments combine a mixture of rewarding and relaxing multi-sensory experiences.

Tactile: A variety of textures, shapes, surface materials and acoustic vibrations put our clients in that just right state for optimal learning and life engagement.

Visual: Changing the color and movements of those colors within the MSE focuses or expands attention to their environment for building adaptive capacity.

Auditory: Music is selected to engage and open the emotions and brain on a deep and intuitive level so our client can experience joy in learning new behaviors and skills.

Who Can Benefit

Our therapeutic approach is ideal for children and adults with special needs, as well as those affected by dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Due to their emotional and sensory limitations, they find it hard to function in the world as others do.

We open the client’s sensory receptors and allow them to move beyond their functional limitations through behavioral changes using the controlled sensory environment.

Coupled with a Mindful Approach by the therapist, change can be strategically facilitated in the moment by discerning when the client is ready to move to the next challenge.
